The Great Melbourne Hailstorm of 2010
These are photographs and a video I took of the sudden Melbourne hailstorm on 6th March 2010. 40mm of rain fell within an hour. Today was one of the main days of Moomba. From our apartment we could see the rides in the Alexandra Gardens. The sky suddenly blackened, and the lights of the ride were suddenly visible in the middle of the afternoon. Within a very short time the rides had all been closed and hundreds (thousand?) of people had to escape the enormous hailstones.

A panorama of the hail. One of the downpours of Manchester House (opposite) broke and spouted water mid way down. But that was nothing compared to the devastation at Southern Cross Railway Station and the ABC Building in Southbank: both had their roofs fail and they got flooded.
